National Honey Month

It’s a natural sweetener you may add to a hot beverage or baked food. It’s made by a very important flying insect who is a major pollinator. Have you guessed what substance we are describing? It’s, of course, honey! September is National Honey Month and we want to highlight why we love this granola ingredient.

Wildflower Honey

Bee getting nectar from a flower.Honey is produced primarily by bees. The process begins with bees gathering and then refining the sugary secretions of plants (primarily floral nectar). After gathering the flower nectar, bees will bring it back to the hive and the refining process begins. One bee colony can produce 60 to 100 pounds of honey per year!

Honey is classified by the source(s) from which the nectar is gathered. Some classifications include:

  • Blended: a combination of floral sources, combined by the business selling the honey
  • Monofloral: made primarily by one type of flower
  • Polyfloral: derived from nectar of many types of flowers, also known as wildflower honey

All of our Honey granola flavors (and granola bars) feature all-natural wildflower honey.

Honey Health Benefits

We choose to use wildflower honey for our granola because it offers a bold flavor for the least amount of sugar. You can taste the quality of the honey with every handful of granola. It also helps that honey has great health benefits!

Some honey health benefits:

  • It’s rich in antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory properties
  • Helps lower bad cholesterol (LDL) while raising good cholesterol (HDL)
  • Helps lower blood pressure

Thank you bees for creating this wholesome and beyond delicious food!
