Not every nut receives their own special day, but the popular almond is certainly one that deserves it! On National Almond Day, we pay tribute to one of our favorite granola ingredients and look at what makes this nut taste beyond delicious.
Almonds deliver so many nutrients, they can be considered a wholesome snack by themselves! According to Healthline.com, almonds are “highly nutritious and rich in healthy fats, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.” Almonds are also one of the best sources of vitamin E, which is linked to lower rates of heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.
“I love the flavor of almonds and the texture of sliced almonds, especially toasted ones.” says Golden Girl Granola owner Deborah O’Kelly. “I have so many customers tell me that our granola has a soft crunch, and I think the sliced almonds have a lot to do with it.”
Almonds and Granola
In preparation for baking our granola, we slice the almonds so there is more surface area for toasting, enhancing the flavor of the nuts. They’re also easier to chew than whole almonds when mixed with our granola.
Our supplier of these tasty nuts is Blue Diamond almonds. They sustainably source their almonds with a cooperative growers approach while “continuously searching for ways to drive efficiencies in waste reduction, water use efficiency, and energy consumption” in their facilities. Blue Diamond doesn’t use any genetic engineering when growing their almonds (Non-GMO), which is exactly what we look for in all-natural ingredients.
